Another post in the Ask The Organizer series! I am so happy when someone posts a question here on the blog or on the facebook page. Keep them coming!
“I have a dorm room/studio-ish room that could definitely use organization!”
Here are some options for increasing your storage, without decreasing your style.
For a low cost solution to storage problems, hang chairs on the wall and use the leg supports as hangers and the seat bottoms as a book shelf. This would only work if you can put nails in the wall.
A Bookshelf as a room divider serves two purposes, as storage and as a way to create individual rooms in one open space. The Ikea Expedit ($139) even has an option to turn into a swinging wall by adding on the expedit casters. A bookshelf could also be used as a headboard creating storage without creating holes in the wall. This could also serve as a night stand. Raise the bed for more hidden space. I have seen many versions of this including using risers, cinder blocks, and even creating a bed platform with drawers.Create additional space by adding a shelf over the sink.
Hang display items from the ceiling instead of the wall. Talk about using vertical space, if you have no wall space for photos and prints, try hanging them from the ceiling.
When it comes to tight quarters with limited storage, my advice is be creative and Go Vertical! Good luck and I would love to see how you’ve organized your tight space!

Excellent ideas! I’ve also seen shelves mounted just above a doorway.
Great idea Margie! Thank you for sharing!
Whoa! That chair idea is pretty genius! I love my Expedit bookshelves. They hold a LOT of my supplies and are really very inexpensive.
With all the new micro apartments being built I know a lot of items are being stored in or on the walls. I’ve even seen tables hung on the wall to create a larger space. And I love Ikea! I even know someone who has put together the large Expedit all by herself!
AWESOME!!! What FANTASTIC ideas!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Glad you enjoyed!
